Chapter Sixteen

The physical ache faded with time, but not fiery anger over losing her Fiat. Every time her mind drifted to the image of the burning wreckage, she couldn’t help but start pacing, wishing there had been more Jacobsen assassins there to kill.

Alison still paced in her living room, her jaw tight. Fortunately, AET had been surprisingly easy to deal with, and they seemed happy that she’d “resolved the incident with a minimum of collateral damage.” A few of them eyed her with disdain, but she was happy to not have to deal with the heavy level of distrust her father had suffered with for years in LA.

She might be a wild card, but they seemed to think they could play her to their advantage. She was more than fine with letting them think that. Pissing off the cops wouldn’t help, and it wouldn’t bring back her car.

“Those fucking assholes.” Alison shook her head. “I still can’t believe it. I remember the day my mom gave me that car. It was her favorite. She used it on all sorts of jobs. It meant something. It was a symbol of our connection. It was like she was saying, ‘Sure, I adopted you, but this is my legacy to you. You are my daughter.’ And those assholes blew it up to make a point.” She threw up her arms.

“You made the point to them, girlfriend. We took them out. That’s got to count for something.” Hana sighed from the couch. “But I’m sorry. I wish I could have done more to help.”

“They took the car out before the fight even started. There was nothing you could have done.” Alison stopped pacing and crossed her arms. “And, by the way, you were awesome, Hana. Knowing you could take those assholes on at the front let me concentrate on the big guns in the rear. Even with Tahir’s help, things could have gotten dicey with railguns involved.”

“You think?”

Alison nodded. “I know. You keep talking about us needing ass-kickers? Well, you’re an ass-kicker already. There aren’t many people I could hire off the street who could take down five professional killers that quickly. You’re already much more dangerous than Trey was when he started working for my dad, and now he can take on powerful wizards by himself. By the end of this, you’ll be the one wandering around town giving speeches about ‘I’m Hana Sugimoto, and you better surrender if you don’t want to die.’”

The fox laughed and shook her head. “I don’t know about that, but thanks. But do you think it’s over now? This is the second time you’ve kicked their asses. That’s got to make them at least think it’s a bad idea to mess with you. The Eastern Union might be mad at you, but they’re not sending guys at you to get taken out. And all the equipment they just lost! It’s not like you can buy power armor at Costco.”

“Hell, no, I don’t think it’s over. There’s money involved, and money makes people do stupid shit.
